Philosophy of Writing

I write entertainment fiction. No one will pay me for my opinions, more's the pity, since I have lots of them and could get very rich. I occasionally sneak them into my characters' lives or mouths, since characters have to have opinions, too.  They can't just play kissy face all day.  But I can't let them preach too much, and they occasionally say things with which I don't agree, so they don't speak for me.

But there are so many fun ideas out there in the universe I would like to ponder!  First off, what would it take to make people THINK instead of just nod their heads at what someone else says?  Have we lost the ability to see both sides of an issue so that the side yelling loudest gets all the nods?

Let's take one tiny example--even I shout at the ludicrousness of the government paying $3000 for toilet seats.  But let's look at another side--who was the greedy gus who cheated the taxpayers by charging the government $3000 for a toilet seat?

Great character study in that question if you think about it!
