Writers Blog

Just jotting a note about a new website I learned about: http://www.bksp.org/
Writers on writing, probably agents on agenting, all sorts of stuff happening.

No way do I have time to read through all those articles, but if anyone sees anything interesting, let me know!

Mental Power Outages

I'm still trying to close in on the major climactic turning point of the current WIP and the wheels are grinding badly. So here's another tip from today's lesson---another way of overcoming the outage is to research something!

I found this absolutely marvelous, fantastic, wondrous website on Glastonbury Tor

(http://www.glastonburytor.org.uk/) and spent forever reading through it this morning. I now have visual and verbal images of the area my characters are heading into, along with all the wonderful myths associated. I already knew many of them, which is why the storyline has led my characters there, but there were such lovely little details and things I'd forgotten to jog my idea factory. Once I was done there, I sped through a few more to make certain I had all the details straight in my head, and I was ready to send my characters on their way.

Of course, this doesn't help much when I start making up the magical part of finding their way into the Tor, but what I can tell you? I'll get them there somehow.

So research and pictures--excellent for reviving the power.

Ups and Downs

Finally ran spell check on revision, so it only has one more stage to go. I'll re-read in a few weeks before sending it to my editor.

Wrote an entire new chapter in the historical!!! Almost into the home stretch.

Talked to my agent, who has decided the paranormal market is glutted so the paranormal proposals are too iffy to fly. I need to figure out how to post a chapter a week or something because I really want to write at least one of them.

But now I must come up with something new. Brainstorming looms.

Not sure if this comes under Mental Power Outages, but after I finished the chapter this morning, my brain refused to move on to the next chapter. So I switched to left brain activity and added the edits to my revision. This afternoon, after the edits were added, I was ready to play with ideas for another contemp. Maybe our creativity just needs an occasional rest?

Crashing into the Home Stretch

I printed out the last pages of my revised historical to work on while I was gone over the weekend, and I've just managed to read through the final pages. Hallelujah!! I still have to type those handwritten notes in, and it will get another readover before I send it in, but the rest is minor. Still, I'd like to know how people can celebrate finishing a book. I'm never finished.

I'm still waiting for word from my agent before working more on the contemporaries. Now that August is over, things should start picking up in NYC. In the meantime, I'm back to drafting the third book of the historical trilogy. I'm getting near the final climactic turning point and dragging my feet. Conflict is HARD.

Now would probably be a good time to discuss mental power outages except my mental power is currently out. "G" All that revising is creatively draining. I'll have to give it some thought.

Our Power Outages

It's thundering so my electrical power may be out again shortly. But Sherrie and Nina inquired about mental and physical "power outages," and since I've lost track of today's revisions with all my jumping up and down, I might as well try to jot a word here before the world goes dark.

Physical is easier to address. When I was in Charlotte and the weather was gorgeous 85% of the time, I'd walk through our lovely tree-lined neighborhoods. Walking invigorates me when it's not a hundred degrees humid outside, as it is now. Now that I'm in St Louis, I do my walking on a NordicTrak down in the basement, where it's lovely and cool. I have a book rack attached to the bar and read while I exercise. I used to have a TV where I could watch the news while I was at it, but we haven't run a cable downstairs in this house. So now I just do basic exercises while watching the news. Still doesn't help those mid-afternoon sleepies. That's when I do e-mail. "G"

Chairs are definitely a rant for another day! And so are mental power outages, since the thunder seems to be directly overhead. I'll be back... Be very afraid!
